The Thirty-seventh Annual Meeting of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons was held at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, Louisiana, on January 29–31, 2001, with an attendance of 4,945 registrants, including spouses and exhibitors. The Scientific Sessions were attended by 1,248 members of all categories and 913 guests, including 233 residents, for a total of 2,162 physician attendees. There were 1,029 registrants present at the Thirty-fourth Annual Postgraduate Course. The CCCETS Basic Science Lecture given by Joseph Vicante of Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts, was entitled “Tissue Engineering: A 21st Century Solution for Surgery Reconstruction.” At the Postgraduate luncheon, The Honorable David Durenberger, Washington, DC, spoke on Washington’s impact on the development and use of technology within healthcare. Co-Chairs Andrew C. Fiore and G. Alexander Patterson and the members of the Committee on Postgraduate Education are to be commended for putting together an excellent program, which attracted a large number of attendees. The use of the IRIS-Audience Response System at the Postgraduate Course provided attendees with an opportunity to submit immediate feedback on a variety of questions. This information was both interesting and educationally insightful to the participants. Continued this year on Tuesday morning were the Clinical Workshops. On Wednesday morning a series of Meet the Experts Sessions on selected topics was held. These were run concurrently with the popular How I Do It Breakfast Sessions. The J. Maxwell Chamberlain Memorial Paper, “Surgical Repair of Extent II Thoracoabdominal Aortic Aneurysms: Evaluation of Morbidity and Mortality” was presented by Joseph S. Coselli and was coauthored by Scott A. LeMaire, Cuneyt Koksoy, Zachary C. Schmittling, and Lori D. Conklin. The Poster Sessions were continued this year and included three poster presentation sessions. Each poster was briefly presented by the author in a formal setting and then discussed by the attendees. These sessions were extremely popular and were judged by the participants and attendees as being a valuable component of the Annual Meeting program. The success of these sessions and the scientific program was due chiefly to the substantial effort of the Program Committee under the vigorous leadership of Claude Deschamps, David A. Fullerton, and Kirk R. Kanter. Jack M. Matloff’s Presidential Address was entitled “The Practice of Specialty Care in 2010: Revisited in 2000.” It will appear in an upcoming issue of The Annals. The Ralph Alley Lecture on “The Transformation of Healthcare: The Lexus or the Model T?” was presented by William R. Brody, President of The Johns Hopkins University. The inaugural Thomas B. Ferguson Lecture given by The Honorable Bill Frist of Nashville, Tennessee, was entitled “White Hats and White Coats: Why Physicians are Uniquely Qualified for Public Service.” It appears in this issue of The Annals. There were four successful forums presented at the Annual Meeting. Monday night the Medico-Legal Symposium, the Second International Symposium, and the New Technology Symposium were offered. On Tuesday morning a Professional Affairs Symposium was held. The STS also co-sponsored a number of other sessions, including Practice Management for Thoracic Surgeons, Issues in Heart and Lung Transplant Surgery, and Perfusion Accidents Symposium. All were well attended and judged a success by attendees. Edgar L. Feinberg II and Clifford H. Van Meter, Jr, co-chaired the Local Arrangements Committee. Mrs. Edgar L. Feinberg II (Priscilla) and Mrs. Clifford H. Van Meter, Jr (Marianne) co-chaired the Spouses’ Hospitality Committee. The Annual Reception was held at the Generations Hall. Doctors Feinberg and Van Meter did an excellent job of planning for the various activities in connection with the meeting. The Seventeenth Spouses Postgraduate Program was organized by Mrs. Harold C. Urschel, Jr (Betsey). A good turnout of spouses attended this Postgraduate course. Hal C. Urschel III, Chief of the Chemical Dependency Recovery Services, University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, spoke on “The Elephant in the Living Room.” At the Annual Business Meeting, the following officers were elected: Mark B. Orringer, President; William A. Baumgartner, Vice President; Gordon F. Murray, Secretary; Robert A. Guyton, Treasurer; Douglas J. Mathisen, Treasurer-Elect; L. Henry Edmunds, Jr, Editor; and W. Gerald Rainer, Historian. John W. Brown and Meredith L. Scott were elected Councillors at Large. A complete list of the officers, committee members, and society representatives follows this report. The Society extends its appreciation to retiring officers and committee members for their dedicated service. One hundred sixty new members were elected. The total membership now stands at 4,343. The Smith, Bucklin staff are to be commended for their hard work and diligence, which produced an outstanding meeting. The Thirty-eighth Annual Meeting will be held January 28–30, 2002, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Mark B. Orringer, Ann Arbor William A. Baumgartner, Baltimore Jack M. Matloff, Los Angeles Nicholas T.
