ResumoThe primary objective of this paper is to illustrate the effects of tD ratios (where t is the wall thickness and D is the outer tube diameter) and absolute values of t and D on the energy absorption behavior of axisymmetric carbon-fiber/PEEK composite tubes. Tubes with tD ratios of less than 0.015 fail by brittle fracture whereas tubes with tD ratios in the range 0.015–0.25 crush progressively. Specific energy absorption capability is dependent on the absolute value of t, rather than the tD ratio, and it increases with increasing t up to a certain value above which it decreases. Highest energy absorption capability was displayed by tubes with values of t in the range 2–3 mm. This variation in specific energy is attributed to changes in the crush zone morphology.
