ResumoA number of portraits that John Singleton Copley painted in the years prior to the American Revolution show women clad in "turquerie". The appeal of fashion was strong, but the political, social, and sexual connotations of the costume complicate that explanation for the sitters' choice of dress. Ultimately, the paintings provide a rich opportunity to consider how portraiture-specifically women's portraiture-could become a vehicle for the expression of both colonial and national identities at a time when those identities were very much contested.
