ResumoSince October 1994, when army commanders decided to call a halt to President Liamine Zeroual's latest round of dialogue with the political parties, the resumption of the military offensive against the Islamist rebellion has led to a massive escalation of in the velocity of the killing in Algeria. The reported death toll since January 1992 now exceeds 35,000, and the majority of these have been killed in the last year. But, as was amply demonstrated by the spectacular hijack of an Air France Airbus at Algiers airport on 24 December, the bomb attack in central Algiers on 30 January which killed at least 42 people and wounded 286 others, and the slaughter of five foreigners (including a Briton) working for a pipeline company near Ghardaia on 5 May, this repression has not improved the security position at all.
