ResumoThe translation of Lavoura Arcaica from Portuguese to English involved analytical processes beyond direct semantic synonymous/antonymous links. It was necessary to analyze possible original interpretation through conceptual information garnered from subtext, imagery, connotative phrases, shifts in subject and register, contradictory juxtapositions, underlying paradox, and attempted apprehension of author intent. The metamorphosis required dual interpretation: interpreting the work, and rendering the work. This dual process is arguably always present in translation, but made especially manifest due to the wealth of literary techniques in Lavoura Arcaica. To the extent that the duality of the process is apprehensible, analysis of the translation of Lavoura Arcaica unriddles the process of translation itself and enriches the interpretation of the original work.
