The major objectives of therapy for pump failure, therefore, are to improve cardiac output and decrease venous pressures. Improvement in cardiac output can be achieved in appropriate circumstances by increasing heart rate, ventricular diastolic volume (Frank-Starling mechanism), and contractile state. In addition, cardiac output can be improved by decreasing the external factors that oppose shortening of the myocardial fibers and ventricular ejection (afterload).Systemic vascular resistance is one of these major external factors that play an important...References1.
