Abstract This review details our contemporary knowledge of the mechanisms underlying evacuatory disorders. There is confusion concerning terminology and classification, which is based upon both an incomplete understanding of the multiple mechanisms involved in evacuation, and that current tests to investigate it are not physiological. Nevertheless, despite the need for more research, significant advances have been made and current assessments can direct therapy.
