ResumoThis chapter presents the studies of the effects of drugs that affect blood coagulation, fibrinolysis, and hemostasis. The incidence of mitral and aortic valve calcification has been studied in 1155 patients with atrial fibrillation, of whom 725 were taking warfarin. There was a significant association between the use of warfarin and the risk of calcification and the association remained after adjustment for confounding factors. In addition, respiratory complications can occur because of bleeding in patients taking warfarin. In a study, an 84-year-old woman was found to develop hemoptysis because of diffuse alveolar hemorrhage when her international normalized ratio (INR) rose to 6 during treatment with phenprocoumon and an 83-year-old woman with an INR of 10 developed upper airway obstruction because of hemorrhage in the epiglottis and arytenoids cartilages.
