Resumo

Sodium valproate, a branched chain fatty acid, is an effective anti-convulsant drug both in clinical and experimental epilepsies. There is substantial evidence that valproate modifies the metabolism and action of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA. Whether this relates to the anti-convulsant action of this drug is still unclear. Possible modes of action of valproate are considered in this article.
