Resumo

Identifying drug-nutrient interactions is a significant concern to practitioners. Valproic acid, an antiepileptic drug, is frequently associated with hyperammonemia, and infrequently associated with fatal hepatotoxicity. Drug-nutrient interactions may contribute to the development of these effects, specifically carnitine, vitamin E and selenium. Currently, the literature suggests that carnitine supplementation may be a viable consideration for individuals on valproic acid therapy.
