ResumoThe enthalpies of combustion of n-butylbenzene and nine of its isomers were determined by precision oxygen-bomb combustion calorimetry. The following values, based on the mass of sample burned, are reported for the standard enthalpy of combustion ΔHoo(298.15 K) kcalth mol−1 of these compounds in the liquid state: n-butylbenzene, -(1403.56 ± 0.22); 1,2-diethylbenzene, -(1402.35 ± 0.21); 1,3-diethylbenzene, - (1401.15 ± 0.22); 1,4-diethylbenzene, -(1401.31 ± 0.19); 1-methyl-2-n-propylbenzene, -(1401.40 ± 0.21); 1-methyl-3-n-propylbenzene, -(1400.50 ± 0.26); 1-methyl-4-n-propylbenzene, -(1400.78 ± 0.21); 1-methyl-2-iso-propylbenzene, -(1401.20 ± 0.20); 1-methyl-3-iso-propylbenzene, -(1399.93 ± 0.24); and 1-methyl-4-iso-propylbenzene, -(1400.07 ± 0.24). The “ortho” effect was observed in each of the 1,2-isomers.
