Those who thrive in the midst of the flourishing clinical investigations now that cardiac catheterization is almost a boring routine should be chastened by reading this outspoken autobiography by one of the investigators who was a pioneer in cardiovascular research which brought it of age. With each new recording device, part of the field needed revision. Not only did Wiggers himself make many and substantial contributions but he trained a whole school of followers who are now in the forefront of cardiovascular physiology. The major part of his work was done at Western Reserve University. He gives a good picture of the faculty and the school. His discussion emphasizes the degree to which physiology is beholden to technical advances and the fact that many of the real contributions to physiology came from remarkable dexterity.
