Resumo

In spite of its exceptional importance, the legal sociology of Georges Gurvitch has not had a significant influence on the development of the discipline. Gurvitch's theory has been accused of being confusing, full of outmoded ideas and too complex. But the true reason behind the indifference manifested by most sociologists of law lies in Gurvitch's radical rejection of the legal ideology concerning the role played by reason, political power and professional knowledge in the social reality of law. In view of the present renewal of interest in a legal sociology more critical of the dogmatic concept of law, Gurvitch's thought could receive better consideration in the future.
