ResumoThe fortunes of this midwestern agricultural carrier declined during a 14-year merger case which could have led to its dissolution and absorption into two other railroads, and culminated in bankruptcy in 1975 after further federal financial assistance had been refused. State and private funding did aid in some rehabilitation, but Rock Island was unsuccessful in attempts at improving productivity on its light-density lines. Two unions struck the property in 1979, resulting in federal intervention and directed service by the Kansas City Terminal Railway at government expense. The author sees federal government policies responsible for many RI problems and for those of the industry generally.
