ResumoThe rate of formation of hydrides in tantalum is shown to depend markedly on the rate of diffusion of hydrogen in the metal. Oxygen slows the rate of resction considerably; this is apparently a result of trapping of hydrogen in OH complexes. Deuterides form more slowly than hydrides because of the lower rate of diffusion of deuterium in the metal. A summary is made of some of the thermodynamic properties of hydrogen and deuterium in Ta, Nb and V. This summary shows that binary alloys with Ta and Nb have many similarities, but VH and VD alloys show some differences from the other two.
