Resumo

The article examines social work's efforts in the campaign to save Sacco and Vanzetti. Social work reformers, including Jane Addams and Alice Hamilton, made important contributions to the campaign, but the subsequent execution of the prisoners signaled a painful blow to progressive ideals in American society. I argue that red scare practices and broad social changes played decisive roles in the campaign and are more generally relevant for understanding social work in the 1920s and beyond.
