ResumoThe utility of secondary chamical characters employed in plant systematics is reconsidered in the light of their ecological importance in plant-animal interactions.The taxonomic significance of.biochemicalcharacters representing adaptions to environmental stress is also considered.Taxonomie aspects of the increasing number of secondary compounds found in animals are briefly discussed.Methods of applying chemical data to systems of biological classification are reviewed.
