Resumo

Five patients dying with ulcerative colitis were found to have chronic ulcerative esophagitis. The incidence of this type of esophageal inflammation appears to be higher in patients with ulcerative colitis than in other chronically and seriously ill patients or in individuals dying suddenly without a history of chronic illness. In three subjects there was a relationship between esophageal symptoms and the onset of mucocutaneous lesions commonly associated with ulcerative colitis. It is suggested that this esophageal lesion may represent an additional extracolonic manifestation of ulcerative colitis.
