ResumoSince clinical infection by Gram-negative bacteria has becomea serious problem recently, Gram-negative bacteria {Proteus vulgaris, P. morganii and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) were selected as test organisms for our first bioassay in a search for antibiotics against Gram-negative bacteria.In this study, a plant belonging to the Cupressaceae, Chamaecyparis pisifera Endl.var.plumosa Beissn.[Shinobuhiba in Japanese, an artificial variety of C. pisifera Endl.(Sawara in Japanese)], was employed as a natural source of such antibiotics.Because the methanol extract of leaves and twigs of C.
