ResumoThe determination of copper in natural waters, particularly those containing high concentrations of halide ions, by anodic-stripping voltammetry (ASV) is facilitated by the addition of thiocyanate; a solution with a thiocyanate concentration of 1.0 × 10–4M permits copper to be determined in the presence of lead. The copper peak, at this thiocyanate concentration, occurs at approximately –0.20 V and is resolved clearly from the steeply rising portion of the ASV curve caused by the oxidation of mercury. The height of the copper peak is shown to be proportional to the copper concentration for concentrations in the range 3–100 µg l–1.
