Resumo

In May, 1976, at the 14th National Conference on Earth Science, held in Banff, Alberta, petroleum geologists examined sequence concepts in petroleum exploration. Speeches by Peter R. Vail and Robert M. Mitchum (both of Exxon Production Research Co., Houston) were of outstanding importance and some of their concepts are reviewed. The concept of regional, continental, and even global unconformities is still new, but it appears to be valid and can now be used to advantage, and should be made a part of exploration thinking. As nearly all the world's oil accumulations are related to unconformities, the application of this knowledge has great economic significance, especially at this time of energy shortages. By using seismic profiles from all over the world, micropaleontology, and isotopic age dating of the limiting beds above and below their unconformities, Vail and Mitchum have established the position of the global breaks separating megasequences much more precisely than the author was able to do (in 1958 and 1963).
