ResumoI am pleased to report that the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) once again recognized the Journal of Dairy Science (JDS) as the Number 1 journal out of 55 journals in the Agriculture, Dairy, and Animal Sciences category for 2002. This is certainly a great tribute to our editors, reviewers, authors, production staff, management committee, as well as to our Managing Editor, Jean Rice, for the superb job they have done to maintain the scientific quality of our Journal. A year ago, in April of 2003, HighWire Press began hosting the online version of JDS, and we have received very positive feedback from our move to the HighWire platform. The JDS editors, the Journal Management Committee, and ADSA Board members continue to consider additional features to add the Journal to make it more useful for our readers and a more attractive place for authors to publish their best research results. During 2003, we began the inclusion of Interpretive Summaries (IS), which are brief summaries of no more than 100 words that appear at the front of each issue following the Table of Contents. The IS focus on the potential applications or the advancement of science resulting from the research presented in the summary and should be instrumental in communicating significant findings with practical application to interested parties such as legislators, producers, processors, as well as the general public. During the phase-in period, inclusion of the IS has been optional, but by the end of 2004, we plan to have an IS for each article that is published. The Journal staff members have also been working in the background to make sure that JDS keeps abreast of current trends in scientific periodicals. As a response to the open access movement that many of you have heard of (advocating the "author pays" model so that there are no charges to readers), JDS has become a signatory to the DC Principles (http://www.dcprinciples.org). This philosophy advocates that a balance of numerous models of mixed sources of revenue and mixed models of free access should cover the costs involved in publishing scientific literature across many interested parties. To date, the DC Principles have been signed by 49 publishers of 110 journals. The Journal has also joined with 16 other not-for-profit scientific societies to form the Nonprofit Journals Group to help increase awareness of valuable nonprofit scientific journals to librarians (www.nonprofitjournals.org). We are working as a group on marketing efforts such as a joint catalog and web site to encourage libraries to include and retain subscriptions to our Journals. These subscriptions form an important source of the revenue to ADSA and are a vital component in ensuring that our research is provided to the widest possible audience. We would like to encourage you as members to let your libraries know how valuable the Journal is to you, and to encourage them to activate their online access if they have not yet done so. For 2003, the Journal of Dairy Science published 461 manuscripts and 4437 numbered pages, of which 4295 pages were research papers (Table 1 Tables 1 , 2, 3, and 4). This is the first year that JDS has published more than 4000 pages! These totals include two ADSA Foundation Scholar Award papers, six Invited Reviews, and 23 Our Industry Today papers. Of the published papers, 110 were in the Dairy Foods section, 128 in Physiology and Management, 159 in Nutrition, Feeding, and Calves, and 67 in the Genetics and Breeding section. A total of 671 manuscripts was received in 2003, which was up 31 from 2002, and 444 of these were accepted. Collectively, these numbers reflect the healthy status of our Journal with a continued high submission rate. The Journal is increasingly becoming international, and for 2003, the submissions of papers from outside of North America were over 50% of the total.Table 1JDS statistics for 2003 compared with previous years.2003200220012000199919981997Avg. papers received/mo56535044423939Avg. papers accepted/mo38373130282630Avg. papers published/mo38333029283335Pages published4437363330913413294435413488Average review times (d)105121158158180204NAAverage production times (d)151159125137115143NAAverage total times (d)256271282293295348459 Open table in a new tab Table 2JDS manuscript statistics and days in progress for 2003.MonthReceivedAcceptedPublishedRev. daysProd. daysTotal daysJanuary44273796165261February383230110169279March49273984154238April653950110156266May63453699164263June494043125164289July913825125159284August474326118135253September54463283143226October564140102139241November553345105127232December60334594135234E. An average of 105 days was used in the review and revision process with an average production time of 151 days. Special gratitude is expressed to retiring editors R. M. Akers and S. E. Gilliand. We thank Gary Rogers, who has agreed to serve another rotation as Senior Editor of Genetics and Breeding, and we welcome newly appointed editors Polly Courtney, Jeffery Stevenson, and Paul Boettcher. Boettcher is in a newly approved post as the third Genetics and Breeding Section Editor; a welcome addition to serve the needs of that rapidly growing category of our Journal. In the fall of 2003, 12 Editorial Board members completed their 3-year rotation and were replaced by a new set of reviewers, who were recommended to the JDS Board of Directors by the Senior or Section Editors of our various Journal sections. Appreciation is expressed to the Journal Management Committee: P. J. Hansen (Chair), T. C. Jenkins, H. E. Swaisgood, M. B. Hall, R. Jimenez-Flores, G. E. Shook, and Board Representative K. J. Boor for their skilled leadership last year, and for 2003–2004, the Committee includes P. J. Hansen (Chair), H. E. Swaisgood, M. B. Hall, G. E. Shook, R. Jimenez-Flores, R. R. Grummer, and Board Representative E. Jordan. We also extend our thanks to members of the JDS Editorial Board for their continued dedicated service in evaluation of manuscripts. This function is essential for timely publication of a quality journal and we do appreciate their efforts. Also, the services of ad hoc reviewers are required for timely and quality reviews of manuscripts. The willingness of the individuals listed below to serve in this capacity in 2003 is very much appreciated.M. Brashears (TX) P. Dovic (Slovenia)A. A. AbuGhazaleh (SC)A. T. Adesogan (FL)A.
