ResumoThe list of virtuoso performers who composed for the guitar is long and venerable, and the works of well-known guitarist- composers of the past, such as Francesco Corbetta (ca. 1615-1681), Robert de Visée (ca. 1655-1732/3), Fernando Sor (1778- 1839), Mauro Giuliani (1781-1829), Francisco Tárrega (1852-1909), and Agustín Barrios Mangoré (1885-1944), constitute much of the repertoire studied and performed today. Certainly the intimate knowledge guitarists bring to compositions written for their own instrument can result in works that are tremendously effective—but the results can also be deplorably trite or anachronistic.
