Resumo

I was born on October 2nd, 1902, in Tambov. At that time Tambov was a large governmental city in the European part of Russia, approximately 300 miles southeast of Moscow. My father was an Ear, Nose, and Throat specialist. Later he became a professor in Khar'kov, then still the capital of the Ukraine. My mother's parents also lived there. In 1911 we moved. In Khar'kov I went through grammar school, the only coeducational one in the whole of Russia. Tamara Izrail'evna, whom I later married, was in the same class.1
