Resumo

One of the many missing links in the chain of resuscitation research has been the lack of a well-developed infrastructure for the conduct of multi-centre trials. It appears that the Resuscitation Outcomes Consortium (ROC) has now cemented this link. ROC is a clinical trials network whose mission is to provide the "infrastructure and project support for clinical trials and other outcome-oriented research in the areas of cardiopulmonary arrest and severe traumatic injury" (https://roc.uwctc.org/tiki/tiki-index.php). ROC will involve Emergency Medical Services (EMS) agencies, public safety agencies, regional hospitals, community healthcare institutions and medical centres in 11 regions in the United States and Canada that serve a population of approximately 23.7 million people. ROC is funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute in partnership with the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, the Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the US Army Medical Research & Materiel Command, the American Heart Association, the Defence Research and Development Canada, and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. The initial funding commitment to the Consortium is $US50 million.
