Resumo

The occurrence of anomalies in the trace of the energy-momentum tensor for massless quantum electrodynamics in spherical spacetime is discussed. It is found that, in contrast to previous investigations of conformal scalar fields, the coefficient of the free-field anomaly acquires a coupling-constant dependence in the interacting theory. In addition, there is a contribution proportional to the renormalization-group $\ensuremath{\beta}$ function. The importance of these results in determining the anomaly for an arbitrary Riemannian spacetime is explained.
