Resumo

I have just completed my first 2 months serving as editor-in-chief and extend my sincere appreciation to Jean Rice, Crystal Rothganger, and especially to John Fuquay for their help in making the transition to this new post a smooth one. I am pleased to report that we are catching up with our backlog in the processing and printing of accepted manuscripts. The January through April issues of the Journal of Dairy Science (JDS) for 2003 have published an average of 380 pages. In the fall of 2002, 18 Editorial Board members completed their 3-year rotation and were replaced by a new set of reviewers, who were recommended to the Board by the Senior or Section Editors of our various Journal sections. We are also in the process of identifying ad hoc reviewers who frequently review manuscripts to extend an invitation to join the Editorial Board as an appreciation for their efforts. To encourage use of Editorial Board Members, the abbreviation of the Journal section in which they have agreed to review papers has been added to the masthead page starting with the January 2003 issue; reviewer names are followed by the year during which they rotate off the Board, state of affiliation, and Journal section. At the Winter ADSA Board Meeting, a proposal for the routing of symposium papers was accepted, which promises to streamline the submission, review, and online publishing of symposium papers as well as to assure their availability to searchable databases so that all articles are can be cited by indexing sources. Moreover, page charges will be eliminated for authors of symposium papers. Pete Hansen has been appointed by the ADSA Board of Directors to serve as the Symposium Editor for JDS and Jeff Firkins will serve in this role for the Journal of Animal Science (JAS). Thanks to Pete Hansen for chairing the subcommittee that developed this well-received proposal. We also look forward to the inclusion of Interpretive Summaries (IS), which will soon be required to accompany each scientific submission to the Journal. These are brief summaries of no more than 100 words and will appear at the front of each issue following the table of contents’. The IS will focus on the potential applications or the advancement of science resulting from the research presented in the summary, and should be instrumental in communicating the significance of results to interested parties such as legislators, producers, processors, as well as the general public. Harold Swais-good and his subcommittee are in the process of developing a plan to publicize this new addition to authors and to introduce IS in upcoming issues of the Journal, and we appreciate their efforts. In addition, Hire Wire Press will soon be hosting the online version of our Journal at their site, and the initial launch will take place this spring. Full-text html versions of JDS articles will be provided through High-Wire, as well as hyperlinks to other references, an enhanced search engine, and numerous other options. So, with a renewed Editorial Board, an improved plan for processing symposium papers, the addition of Interpretive Summaries, and the introduction of HighWire, there are several exciting things taking place with JDS this year, and we hope these changes are welcomed by our membership! For 2002,-the Journal of Dairy Science published 398 manuscripts and 3633 numbered pages, of which 3506 pages were research papers (Table 1, Table. 2, Table 3, Table 4). These totals included one ADSA Foundation Scholar Award papes, one Invited Review, and 21 Our Industry Today papers. Of the published papers, 75 were in the Dairy Foods section, 133 in Physiology and Management, 128 in Nutrition, Feeding and Calves, and 61 in Genetics and Breeding section. A total of 640 manuscripts were received in 2002, up 36 from 2001 and 445 were accepted, up 73 from 2001. Collectively, these numbers reflect the healthy status of the Journal with a continued high submission rate. The Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) recognized the Journal of Dairy Science (JDS) as the Number 2 journal of 55 journals in the Agriculture, Dairy, and Animal Sciences category for 2001, and in the top 1% of all science and technology journals (50,000+) based on the ISI total citations. The average time from receipt of manuscripts to publication was 271 days as compared to 282 days in 2000 (Table 1). An average of 121 days was used in the review and revision process with an average production time of 159 days.Table 1JDS 2002 statistics compared with past years.200220012000199919981997Avg. papers received/mo535044423939Avg. papers accepted/mo373130282630Avg. papers published/mo333029283335Pages published363330913413294435413488Average review times (d)121158158180204NAAverage production times (d)159125137115143NAAverage total times (d)271282293295348459 Open table in a new tab Table. 2JDS statistics for 2002MonthRcvdAccptdPblshdRev dProd dTotal dJan585332148115263Feb483818147144291March513830119138257April503636109145254May663837123154274June483836112148260July623329124158282August653719115157272September463540106163269October533733133168301November423245118158276December51304393159252Average533733121151271Total640445398 Open table in a new tab Table 3JDS papers and pages by article typeMonthResearchOur Industry TodayInvited ReviewsOLOSymposiaPapersPagesPapersPagesPapersPagesPapersPapersJan29245319000Feb141021426010Mar3023800000Apr32287431000May35298214000Jun3628600000Jul2825518000Aug17143219000Sep37331318000Oct3228416000Nov45430121000Dec40395320000Total3753294211602601 Open table in a new tab Table 4JDS papers and pages by science section.MonthDairy FoodsPhysiol/MngmntNFCGBPapersPagesPapersPagesPapersPagesPapersPagesJan64215125109622Feb47985743229Mar43510761195532Apr5411612611118433May656118413108764Jun74510848741183Jul87075810104431Aug166461094216Sep87616136985752Oct10941197979320Nov9901210716170980Dec7581110417173756Total756921331100128113261476 Open table in a new tab To deal with the increased volume and to decrease production times, ADSA, ASAS, and FASS reworked the staffing at headquarters in 2002. Jean Rice now serves as managing editor for both JDS and JAS; Crystal Rothganger is in support with Manuscript Central and other administrative duties. Leon Jeter now works as production editor for both JDS and JAS, handling the correction and assembly cycles of the journals. In addition, we are happy to have Sharon Frick back in her role as a production/composition specialist. Many of you know her from contacts as the administrator for ADSA during the past year. We found we needed her more in publications. Gary Thomposon and Amanda Rolling have been hired as technical editors. Both are trained to work on a number of journals. Thomposon works primarily on JDS and Kolling on JAS. Special gratitude is expressed to retiring editors R. D. Shanks and R. J. Grant. We thank Mike Akers and Steve Washburn who have agreed to serve another rotation as editors and welcome newly appointed editors M. Shutz and R. Kohn. Appreciation is expressed to the Journal Management Committee: Clair Hicks (Chair), G. R. Wiggans, T. C. Jenkins, M. C. Lucy, H. E. Swaisgood, M. B. Hall, and Board Representative D. Barbano. For 2002-2003, the committee includes P J. Hansen (Chair), T. C. Jenkins, H. E. Swaisgood, M. B. Hall, G. E. Shook, R. Jime-nez-Flores, and Board Representative K. J. Boor. Thanks are extended to members of the Editorial Board for dedicated service in evaluation of manuscripts. This function is essential for timely publication of a quality journal. Completing terms on the Editorial Board in 2002 are: P. J. Berger, M. A. Cousin, J. K. Drackley, P. J. Gaynor, J. H. Harrison, R. W. Hartel, P. C. Hoffman, M. C. Lucy, K. L. Macmillan, D. J. Miller, R. L. Nebel, D. M. Smith, J. W. Spears, J. Thompson, M. J. Vande-Haar, G. A. Varga, J. I. Weller, and M. C. Wiltbank. Also, the services of ad hoc reviewers are required for timely and quality reviews of manuscripts. The willingness of these individuals to serve in this capacity in 2002 is appreciated.G.
