ResumoThe oxidation of glucose has been studied on single-crystal platinum electrodes with 11 different orientations. A pronounced structural sensitivity of the reaction was found. The Pt (111) surface and its vicinals are the most active. The peak current for Pt (111) is approximately one order of magnitude larger than the peaks for Pt (100) and Pt (110). Hydrogen adatoms inhibit the reaction on all surfaces except on Pt (100) and the vicinal planes. Strongly bound species appear to be preferentially adsorbed on step sites. For stepped surfaces from the [110] zone the reaction rate decreases linearly with the step density.
