Resumo

The aim of the present work is to theoretically and simply explain how the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) operates for harmonic functions and why it selects out the highest frequency oscillation, leaving the lower frequency oscillation in the signal. Also derived are the obtainable frequency resolutions of the method and the existence of a critical frequency limit that allows separation of the closest harmonics.
