ResumoThis review of the 2010 publications on drugs that affect autonomic functions or the extrapyramidal system covers drugs that stimulate both alpha- and beta-adrenoceptors (adrenaline, noradrenaline, Ephedra and ephedrine, and pseudoephedrine), drugs that predominantly stimulate α1-adrenoceptors (phenylephrine), drugs that stimulate β1-adrenoceptors (dobutamine), drugs that stimulate β2-adrenoceptors (ritodrine), drugs that stimulate dopamine receptors (dopamine, levodopa, and dopamine receptor agonists), other drugs that increase dopamine activity (amantadine and the catechol-o-methyl transferase inhibitor entacapone), and drugs that affect the cholinergic system (acetylcholinesterase inhibitors and anticholinergic drugs). It also includes two special reviews; the first deals with phenylephrine in the management of anesthesia-induced hypotension and the second with anticholinergic drugs and cognitive impairment.
