Resonant Asteroids in the Kirkwood Gaps and Statistical Explanations of the Gaps

ResumoIf many of the asteroids nearly commensurable with Jupiter were to regularly cross the Kirkwood gaps, these could be explained as statistically underpopulated regions in the distribution of osculating mean motions n . In that case no gaps should appear in the distribution of time-averaged mean motions fl, the average being taken over a long-period perturbation. The distribution of 185 asteroids around the Hecuba gap shows a similar gap shape as the n distribution and the statistical explanation in this form must be abandoned, but seems to be correct in Brown's modified form. Three asteroids recognized by Schubart to be resonant in the Hecuba gap are confirmed, and (887) Alinda is found to be resonant in the Hestia gap. Asteroids forming 13 pairs and one triplet recognizable by very similar fl, mean eccentricities, and inclina- tions, are suggested to be fragments of larger asteroids.
