ResumoHemin, at concentrations optimal for globin synthesis, produces inhibition of a specific cytoplasmic protein kinase and a ribosome-associated protein kinase isolated from rabbit reticulocytes. Both enzymes are cyclic AMP-dependent. This inhibition is noncompetitive and greater when ribosomal proteins are used as the phosphate acceptors. The inhibition of these protein kinases by hemin and its partial reversal by globin suggests that hemin regulates protein kinase activity in reticulocytes.
