ResumoSporotrichosis is caused by the dimorphic fungus Sporothrix schenckii. The organism can be found in soil and may be associated with sphagnum moss.l-ll Infection is generally a result of implantation into the subcutaneous tissue by contaminated organic material. Agricultural workers are therefore most at risk for infection.12 The disease is generally limited to the skin and subcutaneous tissues. Disseminated sporotrichosis is generally associated with immunodeficiency; in these instances, disseminated infection may result from inhaling infectious f&gal particles from the soil or from reactivation of old disease. Although sporotrichosis is not a common opportunistic infection in HIV-infected patients, more cases are being reported. 13-19 We describe an HIV-infected patient with disseminated sporotrichosis who was exposed to sphagnum moss while cultivating bonsai trees.
