ResumoA model has been derived to predict the in vitro precipitation behaviour of calcium phosphate from supersaturated aqueous solutions. This model, which makes use of the Avrami—Johnson—Mehl formulae, takes into consideration thermodynamic and kinetic factors and relates them to the preferential formation of precursor phases and their subsequent stage-wise transformation to hydroxyapatite. Predictions using the modified expressions have been found to be consistent with experimental data obtained over a wide range of conditions. In particular, the transformation reaction of calcium phosphate under physiological conditions is discussed.
