ResumoA meandering pattern and a steep incision is the reaction of the Mark river, as well as many European river systems, to changing conditions of climate and vegetation cover at the start of the Late Glacial. The maximum incision is reached between 1 1 780 and 1 1 920 yr. B.P. It has induced lowering of the water table resulting in increased eolian activity. This period corresponds to the Older Dryas which is characterized by dry soil conditions and not by changed climatic conditions. River accumulation started from that time on and continued during the Allerod, Younger Dryas and Holocene. The paleobotanical record is strongly dependent on the geomorphological position in the river basin.
