ResumoSingle crystals of anhydrous EuCl3 containing only 0.05 at % Eu2+ have been grown under a protective atmosphere of Cl2 using the Bridgman technique. The Eu2+ content has been determined by measuring the magnetic susceptibility of the grown crystals. It is found that chlorination reduces the amount of Eu2+ even in the polycrystalline raw material of EuCl3.
