Abstract The heterotopic gastric cyst of the oral cavity is a rare lesion. A recurrent gastric cyst in the floor of the mouth of a young female patient is presented. Current theories dealing with the histogenesis of these lesions are presented and discussed. Based on the available embryologic and clinical information, a new histogenetic concept for the development of the heterotopic gastric cyst is proposed.
