Resumo

A method is described for the determination of metallic beryllium and berylliu m carbide in ber ylli um metal.T he ber yllium m etal is dissolved in potassiu m hydroxide solu tion at a co ntrolled rate of solution.T he liberated hydrogen and methane are burned with copper oxide in a n atmosphere of nitr ogen.T he water a nd carbon dioxide for med are a bsorbed in mag nesiu m per chlorate a nd a~carite , respectively, and determined b y weighing.T he metallic ber yll ium is calculated fr om the water , corrections being m ade for a ny calcium or a lum inum p resent as impurities that also liberate hydrogen in caustic solut ion ' i n case ber y llium cal'bide is deter mined , a cor rection may also be m ade for t he water fo lmed by the co mbustion of methane.T he beryllium carbide is calculated as Be2C from the car bon dioxide formed.
