Resumo

Recent advances in magneto-optic storage media have centred around rare earth - transition metal (RE-TM) alloys of Tb - Fe/Co. I n this paper we compare the results of measuring the magnetic properties of these materials by two different methods. In the first method measurements were performed using a polar kerr magnetometer, that is the surface magnetisation was probed. In the second method bulk magnetisation was measured by means of an alternating gradient force magnetometer (AGFM). Comparison between the two methods above is important as material parameters are frequently determined by bulk magnetic measurement techniques such as VSM or AGFM whereas in real applications it is the polar kerr effect that is used to store information. The materials examined were Tb 20 -Fe 72 -Co 8 single layer alloys 485Å thick, protected by under and overlayers of Si 3 N 4 . Samples 1 and 2 were produced under identical conditions, sample 1 was as sputtered, and sample 2 was laser annealed.
