ResumoAlthough the Histadrut has long been known as one of the most complex and all-embracing labor federations in the world, very little material on this organization is available in English sources. In this study, the author provides a detailed description of the Histadrut's structure, membership, and major functions, with particular emphasis upon its several economic and semi-public functions which reach into every corner of the Israeli economy. With 75% of all workers as members, and as the direct employer of one fourth of Israel's labor force, the Histadrut faces many of the same problems as the State of Israel itself. Although some of these problems remain unresolved, the author suggests that the willingness of the Histadrut to cede some of its historic functions to the government augurs well for the future of Israel and its labor movement.
