Resumo

We have studied the effects of ouabain and taurine on isolated perfused guinea-pig and rat hearts. Ouabain always exerts, in rat a negative inotropic effect in normal and low calcium medium, while it exerts in guinea-pig a positive inotropic effect. Taurine exerts in both species an effect similar to ouabain. Effects of taurine and ouabain are additive. The mechanism of action of cardiac glycosides in rat and guinea-pig is discussed in terms of excitation-contraction coupling and calcium movements. It is concluded that some aminoacids can exert a ouabain-like effect.
