ResumoDuring the Nueva Granada interregnum, Francisco José de Caldas played an important role in ensuring the legitimacyof the new political order in the Province of Antioquia through the formal use and teaching of mapping appliedto military strategy. In the Gazeta Ministerial de la República de Antioquia Journal the proposal of the Enlightenmentleaders about the professionalization of the army was published and later established by the creation of the MilitaryEngineers Academy. Processes led by Caldas such as the fortification of the southern border, the achievements ofthe Artillery Armory and activities of the Academy, had a significant influence on the press, posing serious challengesto the General Government of the United Provinces while promoting a military solution, rather than a juridical one, asan alternative to defend the cause of Independence.
