Abundance and Growth of Redeye Bass in Two South Carolina Reservoirs

Annual catches of redeye bass Micropterus coosae per 100 gill-net sets increased in Keowee Reservoir from 0.4 fish in 1973 (5 years after impoundment) to 13.8 in 1981 and in Jocassee Reservoir from 2.0 fish in 1975 (4 years after impoundment) to 17.4 in 1981. Redeye bass grew at similar rates in both reservoirs; these rates were considerably greater than those reported for the species in southern streams but somewhat lower than those reported for ponds. Mean back-calculated total lengths at annuli I-V in Keowee and Jocassee reservoirs were 125, 226, 270, 309, and 326 mm and 122, 216, 276, 313, and 317 mm, respectively.
