ResumoAbstract Rats displayed amnesia for one-trial aversive (Experiment 1) and appetitive (Experiment 2) learning tasks in which certain durations of continuous exposure to reinforcement were followed immediately by electroconvulsive shock. However, amnesia was significantly attenuated in rats given a shorter exposure to the reinforcement, yet with the same interval between the onset of reinforcement and electroconvulsive shock. Processes that protect newly acquired information from the effects of electroconvulsive shock do not appear to be initiated until the perceived offset of the incoming information flow.
