Abstract The Australian dragonfly fauna includes 263 species and 20 subspecies, 97 species and 10 subspecies of Zygoptera and 166 species and 10 subspecies of Anisoptera. More species occur in New South Wales, Queensland and the Northern Territory than elsewhere; 134 species are known from north‐eastern Queensland, which has the richest regional fauna.
