ResumoAbstract Two patients in whom megaloblastic anemia caused by folate deficiency developed as a complication of hyperalimentation therapy are described. The megaloblastic hematopoiesis occurred within 5 weeks of commencing hyperalimentation with a folate-free parenteral preparation. Chronic excessive ingestion of alcohol, inadequate nutrition or both characterized the background of each subject. Such persons, because of reduced body folate stores, are at maximal risk for the development of megaloblastic anemia when total parenteral nutrition lacking supplemental folic acid is administered.
