Carlos Garcia Mac Gaw, The transition from slavery to feudalism and the villa, DHA 32/2, 2006, 27-41. Abstract: This works argues in favour of the opportunity of giving up the concept of the slave mode of production in Roman history, and also questions the idea of a transition from slavery to feudalism. The central role of the slave villa is criticized, given the evidence for the coexistence and intermingling of slave and free work in this productive unit, as well as the persistence of the small peasant property. Primary sources and archaeological reports are used.
