Resumo

The composition of hydrocarbon smogs and the amount of near ultraviolet radiation within such smogs are interdependent. A model is presented which enables one to study the effect of smog composition on the transfer of ultraviolet irradiances. The irradiances are computed using Eddington's Approximation. A comparison between a series of radiometric measurements conducted in such a smog, and the irradiances computed using the model shows good agreement. The measurements are inverted to yield information on the composition of the smog. It is shown that the aerosols within the smog partially absorb radiation, namely that their single scattering albedo is 0.94 ± 0.05.
