ResumoHigh quality Cr2O3 crystals were grown under an oxygen atmosphere at 1200°C by the slow decomposition of K2Cr2O7 melt to which K2CrO4 and K2B4O7 were added. Bulky crystals were grown from an equimolar composition of the three components, platelets were formed in the K2Cr2O7 rich region, and no crystals were yielded in the K2CrO4 and/or K2B4O7 excess region. Bulky crystals were of good quality compared to the plates. The measurement of the interfacial angles proved that c(0001), r{1011} and n{2243} develop preferentially as the main crystal planes. Etch pit results were also reported.
