Resumo

From a national survey of selected community colleges and a review of research and debate, the authors identify issues, implications, and directions for college administrators addressing their colleges’ use of part‐time faculty. The key recommendation is that colleges take serious steps toward improving the utilization and integration of part‐time faculty. The authors then identify strategies for improving community college part‐time faculty use. Recommended strategies include (a) recruiting, selecting, and hiring part‐time faculty with clear purpose and direction; (b) requiring part‐time faculty participation in substantial orientation activities and providing faculty support structures; (c) requiring part‐time faculty participation in professional development; (d) integrating part‐time faculty into the life of the institution; (e) evaluating part‐time faculty performance; and (f) providing equitable pay schedules. Study results indicate that these strategies improve the relationship between part‐time faculty and the institution and part‐time faculty performance.
